The Central Valley is a large structural trough of about 20,000 square miles (filled with sediments of Jurassic to Holocene age). It is as much as 6 miles deep in the Sacracmento Valley, and as much as 3 miles deep in the San Joaquin Valley.
Who lives in Central Valley?
Lots of different groups AND sub-groups. It is a very diverse community. Here is the a sample of that diversity:
San Joaquin Valley
As of July 2022, an estimated 54.8% of the residents in the central San Joaquin Valley are Latino.
Sacramento Metro
Non-Hispanic whites make up over 60% of the population in Sacramento Metro.
Upper Sacramento Valley
Non-Hispanic whites make up over 70% of the population in the Upper Sacramento Valley.
South San Joaquin Valley
Latinos are the largest ethnic group in the South San Joaquin Valley, making up 46% of the population.
The Central Valley is also home to many sizable and eclectic racial/ethnic communities, including Assyrians, Dutch, Sikhs, Croats, Portuguese, Armenians, Basques, East Indians, Pakistanis, Syrians, Azorean Portuguese, and Filipinos.
However, ethnic compositions vary across subregions: No one group composes a majority of the population in the San Joaquin Valley, but non-Hispanic whites make up over 60 percent of Sacramento Metro’s population and over 70 percent of the Upper Sacramento Valley’s.
